Healthcare organizations are increasingly targeted by hackers looking to steal patient data. These computer experts hone in on hospitals and practices because of the high monetary and identity value to cyber thieves and other nefarious online “actors.”

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, “Data reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows that almost every month last year, more than 1 million people were affected by data breaches at health-care organizations.” Additionally, they wrote, “Intelligence agencies in the U.S., Canada and Europe have warned repeatedly that nation-state-backed hackers and cybercriminals are attempting to break into health-care systems to steal vaccine-related research and other data.”

It can be stressful for folks at hospitals to face the sheer number of attacks along with so many other risks to mitigate. Healthcare compliance professionals can feel that the management of cyber threats in addition to their already existing compliance program is overwhelming and even a little redundant.
