On July 12, 2018, CMS published its annual update of the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. The proposed rule includes an overhaul of Evaluation and Management services as well as many other changes that will impact outpatient therapy services, off campus provider-based hospital departments, telehealth, Quality Payment Programs and much, much, more.

For example, CMS is “proposing a number of coding and payment changes to reduce administrative burden and improve payment accuracy for E/M visits.” They’re proposing to let practitioners make the choice to document office/outpatient E/M visits using “medical decision-making or time instead of applying the current 1995 or 1997 E/M documentation guidelines, or alternatively practitioners could continue using the current framework.”
