What would healthcare look like without laboratory services? After all, ordering lab tests is commonly one of the first things a physician does when trying to diagnose a medical condition.

But, what happens when lab tests are ordered too frequently? Or, when they’re not even medically necessary in the first place?

The University of Miami recently found out the answer to those questions - and paid $22 million to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act. The allegations claim that UM had ordered medically unnecessary tests and submitted false claims through both its laboratory and off-campus hospital facilities.
