EMR technology can make it easier to commit fraud, according to health information technology experts. Luckily, turning on your audit trail function within your EMR improves transparency, increases audit accuracy, and makes it a whole lot harder to get away with fraud.

But that’s not the only thing the audit trail is good for. In a recent study by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, they reported that not all CMS contractors were able to determine whether a provider had copied language or over-documented in a medical record. The OIG made a recommendation for CMS to direct its contractors to use providers’ audit trails. Stating, “...audit trails could be valuable to CMS’s contractors when reviewing medical records.”
