Healthcare audit programs are active and mature — but many still rely heavily on manual processes, limited automation, and lean teams.

2025 Auditing Checkup Report

Healthcare audit programs continue to demonstrate strong operational maturity. Respondents rated overall auditing program effectiveness at 7.42 out of 10, reflecting confidence in foundational audit structures and workflows.

But the data also points to a major reality: many audit teams remain heavily manual.

This year’s survey findings reveal widespread reliance on spreadsheets, limited automation, staffing constraints, and growing pressure tied to AI, documentation quality, and evolving payer expectations.

Some of the most notable findings include:

  • Nearly half of organizations still do not use dedicated auditing software
  • 70% identified AI adoption and automation as emerging risks impacting audit strategy
  • 73% cited limited staffing and resources as the biggest barrier to audit efficiency
  • 70% said their audit processes are still only 0–25% automated

The report offers a practical look at how healthcare audit programs are adapting to increasing operational demands while balancing accuracy, defensibility, and modernization.
