7 Medical Auditing Best Practices for the Perfect Audit

A lot can go wrong when you conduct an audit, so preparedness is absolutely crucial. Auditing is not for the faint of heart. We have to think on our feet, work in “interesting” circumstances, and on occasion, deal with intense levels of crazy.

Conducting an audit doesn’t have to be such so complicated, though. There are some steps you can take for a smoother audit.

Follow these simple steps to conduct the perfect audit:

  1. Management Support: Ensure that you have a high-caliber staff and that the auditing director is a true leader. They’ll be charged with planning, implementation and coordinating audit efforts. It’s important that they excel in their position.
  2. Policies And Procedures: Write down internal practice guidelines for your audits and focus on consistency, accuracy, and productivity.
  3. Limited Resources: Prepare for limited resources. This is an all too common problem we experience when performing an audit. It happens, so have a plan.
  4. Third-Party Support: Sometimes it’s better to call in a third-party for support. It’s a great way to get unbiased results. And, when there are limited resources, it’s the best option.
  5. Methodology: Have all of your methodologies written down. The more you have on file the more prepared you’ll be for any and all situations. Sure, we’re quick thinkers on the job, but being prepared ahead of time certainly makes it easier.
