Preparing for Meaningful Use 2016

There are many requirements for attesting to Meaningful Use in 2016. For most providers, they will be following Meaningful Use Modified Stage 2 requirements which includes 9 criteria for eligible hospitals and 10 requirements for eligible providers. Modified Stage 2 eliminates the menu requirements and focuses the criteria on the most crucial areas.

Your organization should give a lot of attention to the criteria that must be met, especially, areas that have presented the most problems for EP’s and EH’s who have been audited by Figliozzi and Co. In some cases, this leads to the denial of the payment of incentive funds for pre-payment audits or, the return of funds in the case of post-payment audits.

Here are the meaningful use objectives for 2016 for eligible professionals:

  • Protect Patient Health Information
  • Clinical Decision Support
  • Computerized Provider Order Entry
  • Electronic Prescribing
  • Health Information Exchange
  • Patient Specific Education
  • Medication Reconciliation
  • Patient Electronic Access (VDT)
  • Secure Messaging
  • Public Health Reporting

There are a number of steps your organization needs to take to document your compliance. Some documents should be assembled prior to attesting including:

  • Reports, some of which may be provided as a function of the EHR software and some which are the responsibility of the provider to perform and create.
  • Screenshots
  • Proof of the use of certified versions of software consistent with the MU stage being attested to
  • Calculations of patient populations to include or exclude

Another important thing to give special attention to is how Meaningful Use is absorbed into the MIPS and MACRA payment system, which will have an enormous impact on the future of the healthcare industry.
