Protect Your Organization From HIPAA Security Risks

In the past few years there has been a steady increase in HIPAA violations surrounding privacy and security, many as a result of the HIPAA Omnibus rule that took effect in 2013. We can go ahead and make an ipso facto assumption that the violations will continue to rise, with more fines, and a lot more public shaming of those who fail to effectively mitigate their high risk areas.

Sound intimidating?

Adherence to security rules is crucial for protecting your organization from data breach, fines, and irreparable damages to the very structure of everything that has taken so long to build. And compliance requires the participation of all covered entities and business associates but it doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming.

Educating yourself on the high risk areas that have the most potential to impact your organization is a crucial, simple, first step. Ask yourself, as of right now, how much do you know?

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HIPAA SECURITY:

  • Do you know the difference between privacy and security?
  • Do you know everything necessary about security risk analysis?
  • How well do you know processes and terminations best practices?
  • What is the appropriate use of email and texting?
  • What is the best way to properly backup your data?
  • Can you define a business associate?

If you shrugged or answered, “I don’t know,” to any of these questions, you might want to take a quick refresher course in all things HIPAA Security.
