While we often spotlight enforcement actions against physicians, hospitals, and nursing facilities, this story shifts focus: a compliance director and an office manager were recently convicted for their role in a kickback scheme. 

Here’s what happened: 

• Gift Cards for Patients: Medicare beneficiaries receiving substance abuse treatment were incentivized with gift cards. The more frequently they attended sessions each week, the more they were paid. Those visits were then billed to Medicare. 

• Kickbacks From a Lab: The same compliance director and office manager also accepted kickbacks from a laboratory in exchange for sending patient specimens for drug testing. 

The result? A stark reminder that compliance isn’t just about policies on paper—it’s about accountability, culture, and doing the right thing. When leaders tasked with safeguarding compliance cross the line, the consequences ripple far beyond one facility.
