Free Webinar: Compliance Risks Associated With Mental Health Services and Psychotherapy

More and more patients are seeking treatment for conditions of behavioral and mental health. Why the increase?

Thankfully, social stigmas for mental health conditions are eroding, and patients are more comfortable discussing these things with their health care providers and accepting medical treatment.

Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic increased need. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), a third of psychologists said they are seeing more patients since the start of the pandemic. Additionally, the pandemic made many services more accessible via changes to telehealth rules.

“Telehealth has proven to be a valuable platform for patient care in general but particularly among certain demographics and provider specialties. While there is still much to understand and research, these services have filled a gap in healthcare. Telehealth has increased patient compliance, created access to healthcare for patients who may not otherwise have access, reduced no-shows, cancellations and has unexpectedly given healthcare providers a much broader window into their patients’ lives and living circumstances.” Wrote Jessica A. Whitney CPC, CPMA, in her eBrief, “The Impact of Telehealth on Workflow and Revenue Cycle.”

While it’s nothing short of remarkable that many folks are getting the help they need, mental health services, including psychotherapy, have their unique compliance risks. So as compliance professionals, we must be prepared.
