How to Use the OIG Resource Guide to Improve Effectiveness

It’s been almost a year and many compliance officers are still trying to figure out how to make use of the OIG Resource Guide.

The resource guide was the result of a roundtable meeting between OIG staff and expert compliance professionals in January of 2017. The roundtable focused on measures, specifically what to measure and how to measure the seven required elements of an effective compliance program. It’s a fantastic resource that should be on the desk of every compliance professional to reference over and over again. But, first, it’s important to understand what the Resource is, what it isn’t, and how to properly use it.

If you’re like most of us, you probably find yourself asking the following questions:

  • Is the OIG Resource Guide a checklist?
  • Is this the new standard? Should this be used to benchmark compliance programs? How many of these measures do I need to implement or monitor?
  • How does this apply to different types and sizes of healthcare organizations?
  • You’re not alone in your confusion and I’m here to help.

It’s totally okay, though, because you’re not alone. As with most things compliance related, there is a little ambiguity but nothing we can’t easily iron out.
