How to Dissect Corporate Integrity Agreements

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a blueprint for designing improvements to your compliance program? Turns out, there is!

A crucial strategy for structuring and improving programs is reviewing Corporate Integrity Agreements (CIA). CIAs are between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and providers or healthcare entities. They offer an important glimpse into the OIG’s expectations for compliance program standards and are a great resource for compliance professionals.

The OIG negotiates CIAs with providers and organizations as part of settlements related to healthcare program investigations arising under various false claims statutes. Providers or entities agree to the obligations set forth in the agreement, and in turn, the OIG agrees not to seek their exclusion from Medicaid, Medicare, or any other Federal healthcare programs.

CIAs represent an excellent opportunity to learn what not to do, and how to strengthen your program as well.
