Most of us have seen the emotionally charged video of University of Utah nurse, Alex Wubbels, being arrested by Salt Lake City Police after refusing to allow the police to draw blood from an unconscious patient.

An organization that fails to create and maintain an effective compliance program could be forced to return overpayments. And providers may face severe civil, criminal, and financial penalties.

The DOJ just announced its biggest healthcare enforcement action in history. Compliance personnel will definitely want to know the details since over 100 physicians, nurses or other clinicians were individually indicted.

Opinions aren’t always the most effective way to make a case. I’ve found that it’s always easier to find an existing citation or reference instead of using your opinion. Opinions simply sound too subjective and there are too many gray areas in compliance for subjectivity.

I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that compliance involves a lot of moving parts these days. Tracking incidents, training, and monitoring are just a few basics of the position.

As a compliance officer, it’s important that you know the business you’re in. The business doesn’t exist for the compliance program, instead, the compliance program exists for the business.

I get it. Being a compliance officer doesn’t sound all that thrilling to the general public. When I explain my job to friends, I can see their expressions glaze over as they struggle to suppress a yawn. Yet, as far as I’m concerned, my job is amazing.
