In our latest Compliance Conversations episode, I sat down with product development expert, Jeff Young, to discuss tools that can simplify compliance and make you more effective as a compliance officer.

The OIG has updated their work plan in the last year more frequently than in the past and recently added nine more items in September of 2017. Anytime the OIG updates their work plan, I think it’s important to take a deep dive into the new content.

The field of compliance isn’t as simple as hiring honest people who will hopefully “always obey the rules.” In fact, careful hiring doesn’t constitute a compliance plan at all.

1. Under ‘Observation,’ Some Hospital Patients Face Big Bills - “In April, Nancy Niemi entered Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C., with cardiac problems. She stayed four nights, at one point receiving a coronary stent.

Recently, compliance failures cost Florida physicians over $4 million dollars and resulted in a multi-million dollar settlement for a Tennessee hospital. The message is clear: compliance is no joke.

1. Surgery center says 34,000 patient records potentially breached - “St. Mark’s Surgery Center was hit by a ransomware attack that may have impacted the personal health information of 33,877 patients.

An organization that fails to create and maintain an effective compliance program could be forced to return overpayments. And providers may face severe civil, criminal, and financial penalties.
