Why I Love Being A Compliance Officer

I get it. Being a compliance officer doesn’t sound all that thrilling to the general public. When I explain my job to friends, I can see their expressions glaze over as they struggle to suppress a yawn. Yet, as far as I’m concerned, my job is amazing.

I didn’t dream of being a compliance officer when I was a kid, I just kind of fell into it after medical school. And, I’m so glad I did. I know that “following rules,” for a living doesn’t sound that exciting but it’s actually pretty interesting and fun. Every day there’s always something different and no two days are ever the same.

In addition to being fun, compliance is a fast-growing industry with potential for days. Forbes listed Compliance Officer as number 2 for “least stressful jobs” while U.S. News considers it one of  “5 Hot Jobs for MBA Graduates.”

Something else that I really enjoy about my job is the opportunity to mentor and train others. Compliance offers a sort of camaraderie that you don’t always find in other career paths. I’ve personally had a lot of incredible friendships in the field. I’ve had incredible mentors and teachers, and I really enjoy that I get to offer that to others, too.
Another aspect of the job that’s pretty awesome is the opportunity to make training fun and engaging. In every organization I’ve ever worked, I’ve always enjoyed the creative aspect of putting together trainings and tools to improve compliance.

So, there you have it. Compliance is a fun, creative, dynamic, and “hot,” career. I love my job and I can honestly say that for me, it’s the best job in the world. If you’re thinking about a career in compliance, I’d tell you to take the plunge and jump in with both feet. The water's just fine.
