A Brief History of Compliance and the Future of Compliance 2.0

Compliance formed and quickly evolved since the 1980s after the government paid for hammers that were billed at $435 each and $640 toilet seats and fraud was reported for the Department of Defense contractors. These allegations led to the Presidential Blue Ribbon Commission on Defense Management or the “Packard Commission” which gave way to the Defense Industry Initiative or DII.

  • In 1986 we saw the False Claims Act amended.
  • In 1991, U.S. Federal Sentencing Guidelines amendments provided judges with guidance for the sentencing and penalizing of corporations who may have broken the law.
  • In the 2010s that witnessed the birth of modern-day healthcare compliance.

So much has changed in only a few decades and there’s even more in the works. The powers that be are talking about compliance 2.0., a new era of data mining and analytics and the use of technology to improve compliance programs. The future of compliance is now. Are you ready?
